Manisa is a city in Turkey with 278 967 inhabitants and the capital of the province of Manisa in western Anatolia. The city is a center for trade raisins. The city lies at the northern foot of Spil Dagi ( ancient Sipylos Mountains ) and on the banks of the River Gediz. The city of Izmir is located about 40 kilometers southwest of Manisa road.

History

The city dates back to the ancient Lydian Manisa. (For the ancient history qv) The later Byzantium belongs city came in 1313 under the rule of Saruchaniden and in 1398 part of the Ottoman Empire. Until the conquest of Constantinople ( 1453), she was alternately with Bursa residence of the sultans.
