Martin Klizan ( born July 11, 1989 in Bratislava) is a Slovak tennis player.

Life and career

Martin Klizan could win the 2005 U16 European Championships in singles and doubles (together with Andrej Martin). A year later triumphed as a junior at the French Open in 2006. This victory secured him a wildcard for the qualifications in 2007 for the French Open. There he was able to defeat surprisingly as number 729 in the world the Israeli Noam Okun (then number 180 of the ATP rankings ) in the first qualifying round and was eliminated in the second round against Juan Pablo Brzezicki just in three sets of. Then Klizan played various Challenger and Futures tournaments. But tangible successes were slow to place his first tournament victory at the professional level, he succeeded in a Futures tournament in Slovakia in August 2009. In the next six years he could still win Futures tournaments in Italy and Morocco. In April 2010 he won the ATP tournament in Casablanca for the first time against a current top 100 players (Alexander Dolgopolov ) and was eliminated just in the second round in three sets to Stanislas Wawrinka from. Klizan won four Challenger tournaments in 2012. At the U.S. Open he won surprisingly in the second round against set on five Jo -Wilfried Tsonga; Klizan had previously not won a match against a player from the top 40. He finally reached the first knockout round, where he lost the last unseeded player against Marin Cilic. The good performance at Flushing Meadows secured him a jump into the top 50 Klizan won in September 2012 his first ATP title with victory at the St. Petersburg Open.

Since 2007, Martin Klizan plays for the Slovak Davis Cup team.
