Marzahn- Heller village is the tenth borough of Berlin and has approximately 250,000 inhabitants. He created in 2001 through the merger of the boroughs of Marzahn and Heller village. Although the district has no positive reputation in the Berlin population, it is one of the safest districts of Berlin.

Geography

The district lies to the east of Berlin, bordering the districts of Lichtenberg and Treptow -Köpenick, and north and east by the state of Brandenburg.

Districts

The district consists of five districts. The districts Heller village, Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf formed from 1986 to 2001 the independent district of Berlin Heller village.

Population

31 October 2013, the borough of Marzahn - Heller village had 250 813 inhabitants in an area of 61.8 square kilometers. Thus, the population density was 4,058 at the date inhabitants per square kilometer. On 31 December 2012, the proportion of foreigners was 4.6 percent, while the share of the population with a migration background was 12.2 percent. The unemployment rate amounted on 30 April 2013, 11.5 percent.

In Marzahn- Heller village there has been the biggest changes within Berlin in terms of demographics. In 1991, the average age of the two districts of 30.5 years. It increased to 2009 by almost twelve years 42.4 years, mainly due to the exodus of the young. On 31 December 2012, the average age was 43.1 years.

History

All five districts that make up the district, are originally from the county Niederbarnim and was incorporated in 1920 by the Greater Berlin Act to Berlin. Together with the districts of Lichtenberg and Friedrichsfelde they formed until 1979 the district of Lichtenberg. The construction of the development area Marzahn grew in the late 1970s, especially the district of Marzahn, so that was formed in 1979 from the five today the district forming districts of the borough of Marzahn.

After the population - due to the emergence of new areas in Heller village and Kaulsdorf - was increased further, the district Heller village was established on 1 June 1986 of the districts Heller village, Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf, who remained independent until the district reform in 2001.

In the 2000s there was a strong influx in the family house areas Biesdorf, Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf, while the migration was lower in the northern part of the district.

On 25 May 2009 the District received the loaned by the federal government title place of diversity.

Policy

In the policy of the district of Marzahn- Hellersdorf long dominated the Left Party, the (still as PDS) came in the election to the county council in 2001 to 51.1 percent of the valid votes and the District Mayor presented (Uwe Velcro ) four of six councilors.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the district of Marzahn- Heller village relies on the design elements of the coat of arms of the old district of Marzahn. The district Heller village and its districts was part of the district of Marzahn before its inception. Nevertheless, the district council did not want to take over the old coat of arms of Marzahn for the new district. The county formed a crest Commission, which commissioned the heraldist Lutz Döring with the design of the new coat of arms. The current coat of arms was granted on 7 October 2003 by the Senate of Berlin.

The sheaf of corn with ears of corn symbolizes the centuries-old agricultural character of all districts of the district, and the five ears refer to the five districts Biesdorf, Heller village, Kaulsdorf, Mahlsdorf and Marzahn that make up the district. Traffic

By Marzahn- Heller village take the S -Bahn lines S5, S7, S75, and the U -Bahn line U5. Furthermore, several tram and bus lines run through the district. About Bundesstraßen 1/5 and 158 and on the Landsberger Allee / Landsberger Chaussee, the district has a fast connection to the Berliner Ring.

Train

In 2012 there were in the Marzahn -Hellersdorf 30 elementary schools, twelve Integrated secondary schools, five high schools and two senior centers. Since 2008, the private free school exists in district on Elsengrund in Mahlsdorf.

Due to the declining number of pupils number of schools were merged in Marzahn- Heller village and abandoned sites. Thus, the Upper School at Elsengrund was closed in 2009 and merged with the Otto -Nagel -Gymnasium.

The Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin (ASH ) is a University of Applied Sciences in Berlin- Heller village with a focus on social work and health and care management.

In Marzahn- Heller village there is a large number of sports clubs and sports facilities. About Regional importance here has the Athletics Club Berlin (various German and Berlin champion in track and field ).

In early 2005 the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Marzahn- Heller village founded in the district, students from the music school Marzahn- Hellersdorf and students play in the other music schools.

In the park of the castle Biesdorf the Park stage is with about 5,000 seats. It is frequently used for concerts, meetings, park festivals and school events.

There are several museums, including the Gründerzeitmuseum constructed of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf with Europe's largest contiguous collection of objects of the period in Mahlsdorf.
