Matt Carkner

Matthew Carkner ( born November 3, 1980 in Winchester, Ontario ) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. Since 2012 he plays for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League on the position of the defender.

Career

Carkner first played from 1997 to 2001 at the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Canadian Hockey League. After he had already been selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1999 in the second round by 58th of the Montreal Canadiens, but they had offered him even after two years still no treaty he signed in the summer of 2001, a contract with league rivals San Jose Sharks.

The Sharks continued the robust defender in their new farm team, the Cleveland Barons, a. Overall, the Canadians played five seasons until the end of the 2005/06 season for the Barons. In the season 2002/ 03 he could due to a knee injury suffered in January 2003 contest season only 39 games. His best year was Carkner in the 2005/06 season as he gained 30 points scorer in 69 games. After moving the Barons to Worcester, and the low perspective on a firm place in the back rotation of the Sharks, the free agent signed in the summer of 2006, a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. There he plays since the beginning of the season for the AHL farm team, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. At the end of the season he was awarded the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, awarded to the player, which is characterized by special use in the company and signed for the new season as a free agent contract with the Ottawa Senators.

The Cleveland Barons Carkner holds the franchise record for most games (315 ) and most penalty minutes ( 948 ) and most penalty minutes in a season (335 ).
