Meerssen

Meerssen ( listen? / I, German also Meersen ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Limburg. It consists of the village with about 8,000 inhabitants Meerssen, the village league with 6,500 inhabitants, and some smaller settlements.

Meerssen is located near the mouth of the river Geul in the Meuse River, a few kilometers north-east and south of Maastricht Maastricht Aachen Airport. In the town are several small forests that are protected. Tourism is important because of the impressive surroundings.

In Meerssen many working in Maastricht commuters live.

History

The area around Meerssen was inhabited in pre-Roman times.

On August 8, 870, named after the place agreement to divide Lotharingiens between the West Frankish king Charles the Bald to have been and the East Frankish king Louis the German closed in Meerssen.

The sea Sener Basilica of the Holy Sacrament, which is also known as St. Bartholomew 's Basilica, is due to a blood miracle that should have happened in 1222 in the chapel of the sea Seners Benedictine monastery, a famous pilgrimage church. It has been built in the 14th century in the style of Gothic Meuse and was placed under the direction of the architect Jos Cuypers in the 1930s, repaired and expanded.
