Melvins
Melvins are an American rock band that was founded in 1983 in Montesano, Washington.
History
The Melvins were in 1983 by Buzz Osborne (guitar & vocals), the future Mudhoney bassist Matt Lukin (bass) and Mike Dillard (drums), all of whom went to high school in Montesano (Washington), based in Aberdeen / Montesano, Washington. In the beginning the band played cover versions of Jimi Hendrix and The Who, and later extremely fast hardcore punk rock. In this constellation, the Melvins recorded a demo. When Dillard left the band in 1984, he was replaced by Dale Crover on drums. The tape samples were henceforth held in Crovers parents house in Aberdeen. A little later began the Melvins to play slower songs. The result was a mix of punk rock à la Flipper and Black Flag, Black Sabbath Heavy Metal like Master of Reality and 1970s hard rock of KISS and Alice Cooper.
Kurt Cobain, a good friend of Dale Crover, was a huge Melvins fan and helped the band a few times when transporting their equipment. Cobain also tried to join the band as a guitarist, but failed because he was so nervous during the audition that he forgot all the songs. The Melvins 1985 were heard together with Green River, Skin Yard, Malfunkshun, Soundgarden and the U -Men on C / Z Records Deep Six compilation and thus laid the foundations for what was to be later called grunge. C / Z, published in 1986 the first Melvins EP: Six Songs ( the 10 songs 1990 should be re-released ). In December 1986, the band recorded their debut album, Gluey Porch Treatments, which appeared in 1987 on Alchemy Records.
On January 23, 1988 Crover helped Cobain's band Nirvana from during their first studio recordings on drums and played a gig with Nirvana on the same day. Later in 1988, Osborne and Crover moved to San Francisco. Lukin stayed in Washington and formed the band Mudhoney, he was replaced by Shirley Temple's daughter Lori " Lorax " Black on bass. In May 1989, the second album, Ozma, was added, which was not published by Boner Records the same year. Ozma was produced by Mark Deutrom, which should also be a member of the band later.
Since 1990 Nirvana had no permanent drummer, Crover jumped for a short tour on the West Coast with Sonic Youth again with his old friends. Fortunately, Osborne gave the phone number of Krist Novoselic on his good friend Dave Grohl, who had become unemployed after the release of Scream. After the work on the Bullhead Melvins went on a European tour. Her performance in Alzey on 23 January 1991, published by producer Tobby Holzinger on the German indie label Your Choice Records. Back home was arrived yet recorded and released a short EP with Eggnog.
Lori Black left the band and was replaced by Joe Preston. Preston can be seen on Salad Of A Thousand Delights (1992, Box Dog Video), he has his own, inspired by KISS solo EP (King Buzzo, Dale Crover and Joe Preston, all 1992 Boner Records) and playing on Lysol. The EP Lysol was later renamed Melvins because the product name has been used without permission and wanted to prevent tape and label legal action. There are three versions of the EP: the unchanged original edition, the original edition with black lettering and the abgeklebtem Lysol Melvins version.
Preston's Day at the Melvins were soon counted on Lori Black was as bassist on the co-produced by Kurt Cobain major label debut, Houdini (1993, Atlantic Records ) mentions, according to Buzz Osborne Dale Crover and however he have recorded the most bass parts. After the recordings, Black left the band permanently. Bass played from now on Mark Deutrom. 1994 brought the Melvins released two albums: Prick ( Amphetamine Reptile ) and Stoner Witch (Atlantic ). As the music of the Melvins is not just for the masses, they were left in 1997 by Atlantic because of failure fall. Published in the same year with 1-12 singles a sampler of 12 singles. In 1999 she began working with Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings, which published the first two parts of the so-called trilogy of Madness ( The Maggot 1999 The Bootlicker 1999 The Crybaby 2000) 1999. Genre
Often an attempt is made to insert the music of the Melvins in drawers such as, among others, Grunge, Doom Metal, Stoner Rock. Since only a few aspects of the Melvins can be related to these genres ( although the band undoubtedly influence on artists of these genres had ), the Melvins are in their own little niche of rock music. Characteristic is primarily an extremely slow pace at which a variety of Melvins - pieces are held as well as a frequently grotesque increased experimentation. So there are some long passages, sometimes whole albums from drone / feedback sounds or " unmusical " sound scenarios.
