Mer Hayrenik

Mer Hajrenik (Armenian Մեր Հայրենիք " Our Fatherland " ) since 1991, the national anthem of Armenia.

History

The original text was written by the eminent Armenian poet Mikael Nalbandian (1829-1866), the composition of Barsegh Kanatschjan ( 1885-1967 ). The song was first used by the Democratic Republic of Armenia from 1918 to 1920 as the national anthem. Mer Hajrenik was declared on 1 July 1991 before the country's independence by the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR to the new National Anthem of the Armenian SSR. It replaced the anthem of the Armenian SSR, but the original text has been changed and a verse away.
