Mercury Cyclone MJ 1971

The Mercury Cyclone was a sports coupe that was manufactured from 1964 to 1971 by Mercury.

The muscle car was not a stand-alone model, but only as a coupe, a sporty version of the smaller series of Mercury, which was initially marketed as a Mercury Comet and from 1968 Mercury Montego.

A V8 engine was standard on the Cyclone, the engine power was increased over the years. In the first two years (1964 /65) the engine had a displacement of 4700 cc; the same engine was also incorporated into the sportier versions of the Ford Mustang. According to the model change from both 1965 as well as the Comet Cyclone possessed 6400 cc, from model year 1968 saw an engine with 7 liter capacity for the drive. The maximum attainable standard output was 390 hp SAE; so that the Cyclone was well positioned in the race performance of the late sixties. As a particularly sporty top model in the series was in the Model 1970 /71 Cyclone Spoiler produced in limited quantity with standard spoilers fore and aft, special trim and a locking differential.

From 1970 exhaust emission regulations were tightened in the United States. In order to meet the new limits, the performance of the engines had to be reduced. In order for the muscle cars lost their raison d'être. 1971, therefore, was the last year in which it was offered to the Cyclone. As a successor, there was a sporting facilities of Montego coupe with the name Montego GT.

From Cyclone 90 526 copies were built in seven years, including 1966/67, 16,779 convertibles and 1970/71 2384 Cyclone Spoiler.
