Mercury Villager, 1992-1996

The Mercury Villager was a 1992-2002 built by the U.S. automobile manufacturer Mercury in two generations Van.

Mercury Villager had the name already in use in the 1960s and 1970s as a model name for combination models.

The Villager was the sister model of the Nissan Quest.

Model history

Mercury Villager and Nissan Quest were the result of a joint venture between Ford and Nissan. Purpose of the alliance was the construction of a smaller and stylistically demanding minivans. Both models debuted in early 1992 at the motor show in Detroit and differed only in visual details from one another; so the Villager had the typical for the Mercury models that period lighting strip between the headlights. Both had a Nissan engine and were produced in Avon Lake / Ohio at the Ford plant.

The Villager of the first generation, there were three trim levels: as GS, LS and as a luxury version Nautica Special Edition. The Nautica had a two-tone paint ( blue / white or red / white) and a yellow trim, leather upholstery in blue / gray or gray uni. A special feature of his time was the Curves / cornering with all Villager were fitted as standard and the popular in the United States at Lincoln models keyless entry that only the very few and rare Lincoln Mercury Villager models was reserved but have a number code on the driver's door.

The Villager / Quest joint venture came in handy for both manufacturers; Ford Aerostar was getting on in years and sales dropped sharply, while his successor Ford Windstar was yet to come. Although Ford had the financial resources to build an additional plant, but are not enough engineering capacity to develop the vehicle. Nissan on the other hand did not have the money, but was unable to provide design services and contribute to built at Nissan's plant in Smyrna / Tennessee motor.

The Villager was initially very successful, but fell towards the end of the 1990s due to stronger competition increasingly falling behind. In 1996, a small facelift, were changed at the front end, headlights and tail lights ( the light strip between the headlamps was accounted for ); In 1999 followed a major facelift, but not revived the paragraph, which is why Ford shortly after the start of the 2002 vintage Villager stopped the production and the joint venture ended.
