Message Transmission Optimization Mechanism

SOAP Message Transmission Optimization Mechanism (MTOM ) is the W3C recommendation for the transmission of binary data in Web services. It uses XML -binary Optimized Packaging ( XOP ) for optimized transmission of binary data.

MTOM replaces the usual for binary data transmission techniques such as use of CDATA blocks, Base64 encoding, SOAP with Attachments using MIME, and Microsoft's Direct Internet Message Encapsulation ( DIME ).

The recommendation adopted by the W3C in January 2005, following preparatory work since 2003.

Support

MTOM is supported by all SOAP frameworks, including Apache Axis, Apache CXF, Web Services Interoperability Technology ( WSIT ), Windows Communication Foundation
