Midden-Drenthe

( Listen? / I ) Midden- Drenthe is a municipality in the eastern Dutch province of Drenthe. It has 33 435 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) and an area of 342 km ².

Traffic

The A28 motorway between the northern neighboring city of Assen and Hoogeveen crosses the area. From the train station in axes ( where fast trains do not stop ) is twice each hour connection in the direction of Zwolle and Groningen. In the municipality to many bus lines.

Industry and research

  • In hatchets is a factory of dairy products ( DOMO ), one of the most important of the Netherlands.
  • In Wijster is the VAM ( Vuil Afvoer Maatschappij, = waste disposal company). This huge plant processes kitchen and garden waste from all over the Netherlands to garden compost.
  • Southeast of Dwingeloo, on the border with community de Wolden, is the radio telescope Dwingeloo, and east of Hooghalen and the former concentration camp Westerbork, the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope ( WSRT ), founded in 1970, renewed in 1996. This radio interferometer is one of the most important in Europe. It consists of fourteen each 25 -meter movable dish antennas for radio- astronomical investigations. Ten of these antennas are securely mounted, while two can be moved at the eastern end of the array on rails. 1.4 km east of it there is a second pair of movable bowls.

History

Like the rest of Drenthe was inhabited the area of this community as early as the Middle Stone Age. Later, people of the Neolithic buildings here grave mounds and megalithic tombs. In the early Middle Ages " brinkdorpen " Anger villages emerged: a lawn with pond ( potions ), which was intended for the cattle around, the reetgedachten farms and the village church, a long time were the only buildings in the village, which was built of stone. Back there were the fields, and on the outside of the forest. The museum Orvelte, but also in Dwingeloo and Westerbork can recognize this picturesque village picture yet.

East of Hooghalen, not far from the railway Assen Hoogeveen, emerged in the 1930s, the camp Westerbork, where the Dutch government foreigners, including from the terror of National Socialism fled from Germany Jews, has housed. During the German occupation 1940-1945 therefrom was the Westerbork transit camp. In Bovensmilde there was the end of May 1977 kidnapping of teachers and students in an elementary school. The hostage-takers had their victims after weeks of, let go of unsuccessful negotiations on military intervention. Screaming Television pictures of the children who were forced by the captors: " Van Agt [name of the then prime minister ], we want to live " then shocked the whole world. From 1998 to 2000 was the community name " Middenveld ".

  • The Open Air Museum ( museum village ) Orvelte, where many artists have set up a studio or gallery, and old crafts to be shown.
  • The memorial at the former concentration camp Westerbork.
  • The Planetron, a public observatory in the village of Dwingeloo.
  • The picturesque villages Dwingeloo and Westerbork
  • The many forest and heath areas, including in Dwingeloo and around the former concentration camp and the radio observatory.
  • In Ruinerwold there is a 7 km long road, along which are pear trees. Every year in early October there is a pear -picking; the harvest will be auctioned for charitable purposes. Such pears avenue is unique in the Netherlands.

The community is rich in campsites and hostels. The local tourist office provides walking and cycling routes.
