Monnetier-Mornex

Monnetier -Mornex is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Monnetier -Mornex located at 600 meters above sea level. M., about four kilometers south of Annemasse and eight miles southeast of downtown Geneva ( straight line ). The double municipality covers an elevated position on the eastern slopes of the Salève and the Petit Salève, west of the lower Arvetals, near the border with Switzerland.

History

Several findings indicate that the municipality of Monnetier -Mornex been inhabited since the Neolithic, the Bronze Age and during the Roman period. The Celts operated by iron mining at the foot of Salève.

Since the 10th century, the area was later placed under the bishops of Geneva, the Count of Geneva. Monnetier and Mornex (mean age Mornacum or Mornay ) were mentioned in the 12th century. Both in Mornex and in Monnetier was ever a lock. 1659 the villages came to Savoy and divided from that time on its fate. Towards the end of the 19th century Monnetier developed into a health resort with numerous hotels. 1974 Esserts -Salève was incorporated into Monnetier -Mornex.

Attractions

The Church of Monnetier originates from the 12th century, but was rebuilt in 1900. In the 14th century the chapel of Saint -André goes back in Esserts -Salève. Other chapels are located in Mornex and Naz (the latter dates from the 8th century). Of the secular buildings, the Château de l' Ermitage from the 19th century, the Château de Mornex and the mills of the 17th century are worth mentioning at Naz.
