Mont-Saxonnex

Mont- Saxonnex is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Mont- Saxonnex is located at 980 meters above sea level. M., west of Cluses, about 31 km southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The mountain village is located south of the Arvetals on a promising terrain terrace 500 m above the valley floor, in the northern Bornes Alps (part of the Savoy Alps ) at the northern foot of the Chaîne du Bargy, in Faucigny.

The area of ​​26.28 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Bornes Alps. The northern boundary runs along the steep slope below the terrace area of Mont- Saxonnex. From here, the municipality's area extends to the south and includes the projections and heights in the range of Mont- Saxonnex and the entire upper part of the watershed of bronze, a side stream of the Arve. The valley of the bronze is to the west by ridges Les Combes (up to 1724 m above sea level. M. ) and the plateau at the Col de Cenise, flanked to the south and southeast of the craggy limestone peaks of the Chaîne du Bargy. The southern boundary is formed by the main peaks of this mountain range, namely from west to east, the Pointe Blanche ( with 2437 m above sea. Neighboring municipalities of Mont- Saxonnex are Bonneville and Vougy in the north, Marnaz in the east, Le Reposoir in the south and Le Petit- Bornand -les- Glière and Brizon in the West.

History

The parish of Mont- Saxonnex was founded in the 12th century. For the first time the place in 1298 is mentioned under the name Mons de Sersunay. This name was transformed over the centuries about Mont Sersonay ( 1365 ), Mont de Sarsonay ( 1495 ), Mont Sassonay or Sassonex ( 1606 ) to Mont Saxonnex ( 1652). The place name derives from the Latin words mons saxorum nigrorum ( mountain of black rock ).

In the Middle Ages Mont- Saxonnex belonged to the rule Faucigny. As part of the Dauphiné reached the place in 1349 in France, but was delivered in a country Abtausch to the Counts of Savoy under the Treaty of Paris in 1355. After informed Mont- Saxonnex the fate of Savoy.

Attractions

The village church of Notre Dame de l' Assomption stands on a rocky outcrop, which offers an impressive view of the Arve Valley. Population

With 1590 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Mont- Saxonnex one of the smaller towns in the Haute-Savoie region.
