The Qing is a cruise ship that was as Melody for MSC Cruises in use from 1997 to 2013.

History

The ship was built in 1982 under the hull number 1432 at the shipyard CNIM in La Seyne -sur- Mer on the French Mediterranean coast for the Home Lines Atlantic and found to be in service.

From 1988 to 1997 the ship as StarShip Atlantic was. Mid-1990s, the ship went to MSC Cruises, the first inserting it as Melody. 1997 let MSC Cruises rebuild the ship in Durban.

In January 2013, the Melody was decommissioned and placed in Naples. All scheduled for the summer of 2013 cruises of the vessel were canceled. The ship had previously been used for several years in summer in the eastern Mediterranean and in winter between Durban and Mauritius.

The end of 2013 the ship was sold to India and transferred as Qing under Indian flag to India.

Incidents

On 25 April 2009, the ship was attacked at a cruise in the Indian Ocean near the Seychelles by Somali pirates. Passengers and an Israeli security company that was hired for the trip by the risk area off Somalia could fend off the attack of the pirates. Forces Operation Atalanta arrived only after the successful defense of the attack, but were able to follow and make the pirates.

Specifications

The ship is powered by two two-stroke ten-cylinder diesel engine manufacturer Fiat. The motors with an output of 11,190 kW were built in 1980 by Grandi Motori Trieste. They act on two controllable pitch propellers. The ship thus reaches a speed of 20 kn.

For the power supply, four diesel generators with an output of 6,800 kW (apparent power: 8,500 kVA ) and a generator with an output of 320 kW (apparent power: 400 kVA ) are available.
