Mudaste is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Kõrgessaare ( Kõrgessaare vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Description and History

Mudaste (Swedish Mutas ) has ten inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). The place is located ten kilometers north- west of the capital Kärdla ( Kertel ).

The village was first mentioned in records in 1591 under the name Moddas. The place was inhabited for centuries by Estonia Sweden. 1781 she was deported by the Russian Empress Catherine as over 90 % of the Swedish-speaking population of Hiiumaa in the Ukraine.
