Münchhausen am Christenberg

The community Munchausen is located 20 kilometers north of central Hessen university town of Marburg on the northern edge of the district of Marburg -Biedenkopf. It has 3,527 inhabitants and is in its present form since 1974. The total area of the municipality is approximately 41 square kilometers.

Geography

Geographical Location

To the west of the village is situated the Rothaargebirge. The eastern boundary of the municipal area represents the castle forest whose elevation Christians mountain is located in the immediate vicinity of the district Munchausen. The district Munchausen itself and the district Simtshausen are in Wetschaftstal; Wollmarshöhe is located on the same Wollmarshöhe which opens into Munchausen in the Wetschaft. The community Munchausen is on the railway line Warburg Sarnau, which is here called, in its southern sector, " Castle Forest Railway ".

History

Neolithic times already since it was near Munchausen on the Christian Berg, a hill about 2 kilometers east of Munchausen, human activities. In the western area of the plateau of the mountain Christians mounds were found that could be the burial ground of a present on the Christians mountain settlements. In addition, was on the plateau of the mountain Christians a former Celtic and Frankish fortress. Today's village Munchausen was first mentioned in a document that is in the possession of the State Archives of Würzburg in 1213. The name Munchausen is included in the living, but is typical of settlements of the course of the Frankish conquest, which took place in the late 5th to the 7th century. It goes Munch, as well as Munich, the dative plural of Old High German or Middle High German Munih Munich (s) ch, the forerunner of the word monk back.

Incorporations

Coat of arms

The coat of arms depicts the red shield a silver (white ), expiring in a getatztes cross peak, which is covered with a black, five-spoke wheel. The cross in the coat of arms symbolizes the Christians mountain with its medieval church, the wheel points with five spokes on the five districts of the municipality. It reminds of the former belonging to the Electorate of Mainz, and is common across much of the former territory Kurmainzer spread ( Mainzer Rad ).
