Expansion plans

Airstrip

Airport operators of the FMO striving since 1994 to an extension of the airstrip, so intercontinental flights can be offered. In contrast, there is massive resistance, especially from the ranks of conservation because of these plans, the FFH area of Eltingmühlenbachs is affected. The river would have to be led under the airstrip in a tunnel.

According to the plan approval procedure at the end of 2004, the Münster / Osnabrück airport could extend its start and runway initially to 3,000 meters, and finally to 3,600 meters. The construction should be started in December 2006 and completed in late 2009. The then Environment Minister Bärbel Höhn ( Alliance 90/The Greens ) announced the end of 2004 the Eltingmühlenbach in the district Steinfurt as FFH zone, which slowed the expansion plans. It was also brought against the plan approval process, inter alia, the Nature Protection Federation ( NABU) action, which was dismissed in July 2006 by the Higher Administrative Court of North Rhine-Westphalia. In contrast, the Wildlife Protection Society had pushed through an appeal to the Federal Administrative Court, which was remitted in July 2009 due to declining passenger numbers to the Supreme Administrative Court. The court in Münster end of May 2011 was not convinced by the idea of airport operators to be with to be extended airstrip to an intercontinental airport. Therefore, the judges argued that the public interest in the expansion did not outweigh the privileged nature of the natural space. In November 2011, FMO and Nature Conservation Association agreed, can now be extended to at least 3,000 m, the start and runway when the Eltingmühlenbach no longer to be laid under the start and runway, but is routed around them.

The project cost of around 19 million euro were created to November 2011 already, the entire stage was originally estimated at around 60 million euros.

Airport FMO

The Airport FMO is a 200 -acre industrial park for the adjoining to the airport industry, which has been reported south of the airport Münster / Osnabrück from the cities of Münster and Greven and the Steinfurt district in 2004. Since nearly a decade found no takers, finally, the requirements were eased, trade thus did not have to be flughafenaffin. So it was not until the spring of 2013, the first major settlement.

Although the urban structure concept of Airport FMO considering the individual requirements of the Habitats protected Eltingmühlenbachs, but was already ahead of the opening for the K1 the nature reserve Hüttruper Heath, which lies between this impasse and the Dortmund -Ems Canal, deliberately devalued. Peripheral grassland of the reserve, which was only created in the 1990s as a buffer zone was wrapped before the assessment and small bodies of water - so-called Blänken with occurrences of the Northern crested newt - were filled. The planning of the Airport FMO includes a total of four implementation stages of which provides for the final development and extensive destruction also of the nature reserve.
