Miirzzuschlag is a town in the district of Bruck- Miirzzuschlag and the seat of the court of the same judicial district in the north- east of Styria ( Austria ) with 8542 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). It was first documented in 1227. As part of the municipality of structural reform in Styria it is quite merged in 2015 with the community, the new community will continue the name Miirzzuschlag. This is based on the Styrian community structure reform law - StGsrG.

The minstrel Ulrich von Liechtenstein has mentioned on a journey from Venice to Bohemia the term " murzuslage " in his poem woman service.

Geography

Miirzzuschlag is a small town on the river Murz to 670m. Miirzzuschlag is the last town before the natural border to Lower Austria, Semmering. In the northeast is the district Edlach, southwest Hönigsberg. Large parts of the surrounding area belong to the community postal.

The municipality comprises the cadastral Miirzzuschlag.

History

Miirzzuschlag received city rights in 1923. The name is derived, according to the etymology, therefore, that the Murz strikes towards lower Muerztal ( a kink does ), but in reality it probably derives from the Slavic place names here rather Muriza Slaka. 1360 received Miirzzuschlag by Duke Rudolf the iron law. This guaranteed the right to sole production of small iron between Leoben and Semmering. Johann HA Bleckmann bought in 1862 the old ironworks and founded the Phoenix - steel works, then Schoeller- Bleckmann steel mills, today's Böhler sheets GmbH. The first stainless steel in the world was developed in 1912 by engineer Max Wall man in Bleckmann works.

Viktor Kaplan, inventor of the Kaplan- and high-speed turbine in 1876 born here, the Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek in 1946. Miirzzuschlag has always been a working-class town. Since the decline of the steel industry, numerous cultural initiatives are set by the municipality.

Johannes Brahms wrote from 1884 to 1885 in Miirzzuschlag his fourth symphony, and consequently there is now a Brahms Museum. Toni Schruf, one of the first skiers in Central Europe and host of the Hotel Post, grew up in Miirzzuschlag. Eugenie Walter, better known as the actress and character actress Jenny Jugo was born on June 14, 1905 here. Among other things, she played the role of Queen Victoria in 1938 in girlhood a queen.

From 5 to 8 February 1931, the only worker - Winter Sports Olympiad was held in Miirzzuschlag. An organized by the Austrian Workers Sports Association competitions participated according to the current state of research about 560 workers athlete. Competitions were downhill skiing, ice hockey, curling, speed skating, figure skating, ice dancing, held cross-country running and steeplechase cross-country skiing.

The Southern Railway with the Miirzzuschlag station was opened in 1844, the local railway Miirzzuschlag -Neuberg, 1879. According to the plans of the designer Carl Ritter von Ghega the mountain railway from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag could be taken over the Semmering 1854 in operation. The Semmering Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To document the closeness of the town with this important route, the Southern Railway and the Southern Railway Kulturbahnhof Miirzzuschlag museum was opened in a former Mount of traction Miirzzuschlag on 19 June 2004.

Culture and sights

  • Kunsthaus Muerzzuschlag: Modern cultural events center. Genesis: A built in the years 1648 to 1654 Franciscan monastery was re-dissolved by a patent of Emperor Joseph II in 1799 and demolished in 1972. Only the church itself remained standing. This became a modern cultural event center - kunsthaus Muerzzuschlag - rebuilt. The Kunsthaus was presented at the National Exhibition 1991 ' Sports - Sense and Delusion " opened.
  • Brahms - Museum: the musician Johannes Brahms dedicated.
  • Winter Sports Museum: The world's biggest and first winter sports museum in the world located in Miirzzuschlag. It houses the most comprehensive collection of winter sports historical exhibits.
  • Southern Railway Museum: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by Carl Ritter von Ghega Semmering railway, museum dedicated.

Regular events

  • United Games: Miirzzuschlag since 1998, the Austrian venue of United Games. Come to this youth exchange annually 50 to 100 young people from all over the world in the city to a week to carry out projects on various topics. 2007 brought the United Games the first European Youth Congress in the city.

Sports

In 1893, the first alpine Skiwettlauf in Central Europe was held on the situated near Stuhleck on the initiative of the restaurant owner Toni Schruf.

The all- stone hills are the oldest of its kind in Central Europe.
