Muslim Magomayev (musician)

Müslüm Məhəmməd oglu Maqomayev ( Muslim Magomayev, Muslim Magomaev or Muslum Magomaev, Russian Муслим Магомаев, scientific transliteration Muslim Magomaev; born August 17, 1942 in Baku, † 25 October 2008 in Moscow ) was a Soviet- Azerbaijani baritone. He had both as an opera as well as a pop singer and Estraden great success. He was also a long-time orchestra director.

Life

15 years after Mstislav Rostropovich Müslüm Maqomayev was also born in Baku as a citizen of the former, belonging to the USSR, Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. His parents, mother an actress, the father of set designer who fell in the Great Patriotic War, called him by his grandfather, the same Azerbaijani composer ( 1885-1937 ).

From the serious professional

By 1968 Maqomayev studied piano, composition and voice at the Music Conservatory in Baku. The finalists of the Festival of Azerbaijani culture in 1962 in the Moscow Kremlin was considered a great talent and got in 1963 a firm commitment on Axundov Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Azerbaijan State Academy in Baku. Parallel to his studies, he worked in 1964 and 1965 worked as a soloist in many concert halls and opera houses in Germany and abroad. He guested et al at La Scala and gained particular as Rossini's Figaro and Puccini's Scarpia great appreciation from the audience. The invitation to the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre he struck out, finally, to take on the popular music. This was the beginning of his career as a Soviet entertainers.

For light entertainment

Maqomayev soon had great success. He gave several concerts at times on the day in large halls, and his records sold millions of copies. After several successful concert tours, including 1966 and 1969 he sang at the Paris Olympia, Ekaterina Furtseva refused him personally for permission to further tours in the West. A truly international career was Müslüm Maqomayev thus failed state. His success in the home but stopped. Since the late 1960s, especially in the 1970s to the 1980s, Müslüm Maqomayev was highly regarded throughout the Soviet Union esp. as a singer of popular music. Also in the GDR and other countries of the former Eastern Bloc, he was a noted artist. Back in 1969, were Karel Gott and he at the International Song Festival in Sopot Polish musical " draft horses " out of competition. His first gold record for more than 4.5 million copies sold, he was handed over at the Midem in Cannes that same year.

People's Artist of the USSR

1973 Müslüm Maqomayev with the honors Азәрбајҹан ССР халг артисти ( People's Artist of the Azerbaijan Soviet Republic) and Народный артист СССР Award (People's Artist of the USSR ). From 1975 he held the post of the director and founder of the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 1989. In the 1990s, then deepened a conflict between Maqomayev and the Azerbaijani Minister of Culture Polad Bülbüloğlu, which ultimately led to that Maqomayev Baku left.

Maqomayev composed more than 20 original songs, and wrote the music for several film productions of which he also participated in some. He played the lead role, for example in the eponymous movie about the important representatives Persian Dari poetry of the 12th and 13th century Nizami. He was also author of a book about Mario Lanza, was the presentation of a Russian television series on the American tenor.

After a long and serious illness Müslüm Maqomayev died on 25 October 2008. He lived with his wife, the Russian mezzo-soprano Tamara Sinjawskaja, most recently in Russia and visited Baku only occasionally.

Trivia

Müslüm Maqomayev sang Russian, English, Italian, and, though he had only weak knowledge of the Azerbaijani language, Azerbaijani also.

In 1997, the already discovered in 1974 by astronomer Lyudmila Chernykh the Russian Asteroid ( 4980 ) Magomaev was named in honor of the singer.
