Nathan Smith (Senator)

Nathan Smith ( born January 8, 1770 in Woodbury, Connecticut; † December 6, 1835 in Washington DC ) was an American politician ( Whig Party ), who represented the state of Connecticut in the U.S. Senate.

As a teenager, Nathan Smith received a proper education. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1792, after which he moved to New Haven to practice there as a lawyer. In 1817 he was appointed Attorney ( Prosecuting attorney ) for the New Haven County, which he remained until 1835.

In 1818 he took his first political office as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention for the State of Connecticut. In 1825 he stood as candidate against the incumbent Governor of Nationalrepublikaner Oliver Wolcott Jr., subject to that, however. From 1828 to 1829 Smith served as United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

In 1832, Nathan Smith was successful in the election for the United States Senate. He took his seat in Washington on March 4, 1833 to, but he died during his term of office on 6 December 1835. Smith was buried in his hometown of New Haven.

His older brother Nathaniel representing the State of Connecticut from 1795 to 1799 in the U.S. House of Representatives. His nephew Truman Smith belonged to the U.S. Senate from 1849 to 1854.
