Nelson Évora

Nelson Évora ( born April 20, 1984 in Côte d'Ivoire) is a Portuguese triple jumper and Olympic champion.

Evora was born to Cape Verdean parents in the Ivory Coast. His parents moved with him to Portugal, as when he was five years old. He holds the Cape Verdean records in the long jump with 7.57 meters, set up in May 2002 in Lisbon, and in the triple jump with 16.15 meters, set up in June 2001 in Braga. In 2002 he received then the Portuguese citizenship.

At the Junior European Championships 2003 in Tampere he won the long jump with 7.83 meters and the triple jump with 16.43 meters. In the 2004 Olympics he could not qualify as qualifying 40th in the triple jump for the final. A year later at the World Championships in Helsinki, he failed as nearly 14 in qualifying.

His first Endkampfplatzierung in major international championships he arrived in Moscow at the World Indoor Championships in 2006. With 17.16 m he was sixth in the triple jump. In the summer at the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006 in both the long jump and the triple jump he succeeded in the finals. With 7.91 meters, he finished sixth in the long jump, triple jump with 17.07 meters, he was fourth after he had in his career improved in the qualification with 17.23 m for the third time the Portuguese national record. In the final, 17.23 m for silver behind the Swede Christian Olsson would have been sufficient. End of the season as he won gold at the Jogos Lusofonia 2006.

In Birmingham at the European Indoor Championships in 2007 Évora was 16.97 m fifth in the triple jump. At the World Championships in Osaka in 2007, he grew beyond itself. With the national record of 17.74 meters, he won gold in front of the Brazilian Jadel Gregório and the defending champion Walter Davis from the USA. Nelson Évora after Carlos Calado, who was 2001 World Cup bronze medalist in the long jump, only the second Portuguese, who won a World Championship medal in a jump competition. With a width of 17.67 m Évora was at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing Olympic champion.

At the World Championships in Berlin in 2009, he won the silver medal.

Évora is 1.81 m tall, weighs 64 kg and starts for Benfica.
