Office suite

An office suite (including Office Suite) is a set of common software for office work, such as writing letters, spreadsheets, and creating presentations. The most widely used office suite is Microsoft Office.

Components

For such a package include in most cases a word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and a database program.

In a broader term definition also address book, appointment and task administrations (Personal Information Manager) to be counted, e- mail programs, programs for accounting and other frequently used programs in the office.

The components of the Office packages are generally distributed together and are able to interact with each other on a much higher level than it would allow the operating system itself. In most cases, the individual programs are characterized by a consistent user interface within the package.

File Formats

The currently most widely used office suite comes from the U.S. software company Microsoft, the file formats have become the de - facto standard. The ability to import these formats as comprehensively as possible and export is very important for any office suite to be able to exchange data with users of Microsoft products.

In May 2005, the Open Document Format was published by the nonprofit organization OASIS, which has been standardized as international standard ISO / IEC 26300. It is supported at the moment, inter alia, of the office suites LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, StarOffice, NeoOffice, KOffice and Gnome Office.

In November 2008, the Office Open XML format as an international standard ISO / IEC 29500:2008 was published.
