Ola Kvernberg

Ola Kvernberg ( born June 6, 1981 in Fræna ) is a Norwegian jazz violinist (also mandolin, bass, violin, vocals) and composer.

Life and work

Kvernberg comes from a family of folk musicians; He is a grandson of the composer Peter L. Rypdal. At the age of nine, he learned classical violin; age of 14 he won the third prize in a classical competition in Italy.

As a teenager Kvernberg first played folk music at the local music school and received a classical education. His first recordings were made in 1995 with the band Fear of Flying. Two years later, when he was 16 years old, he began playing jazz; between 2001 and 2003 he took lessons in jazz program of the Trondheim Conservatory. Prominence in Norway in 2000, he obtained together with the quartet Hot Club de Norway for the annual Django Festival in Oslo ( where he jammed with Toots Thielemans ). In 2000 he was on the album Hot Club de Norvege presenting Kvernberg Ola & Jimmy Rosenberg ( 2000) with swing standards like Sweet Georgia Brown, Oh, Lady Be Good! or It Do not Mean a Thing ( If It Is not Got That Swing) exposed. The first album under his own name Ola Kvernberg (2001) concluded in style with classics such as Honeysuckle Rose or I Can not Give You Anything but Love. He was also involved with the Hot Club de Norvège, Angelo Debarre and the Tromsø Symphony Orchestra in the production White Night Stories 2002.

With his trio to the guitarist Doug Raney and bassist Steinar Raknes belonged was the album Cats & Doug ( Hot Club Records, 2002) with standards and originals, the other trio albums followed. In 2010, he presented at the Festival of Molde with Joshua Redman his film music Liarbird ( for the film North by Erlend Loe ); for the eponymous album in 2011, he received the Spellemannprisen.

Furthermore Kvernberg played among others with Niels -Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Philip Catherine ( with whom he appeared on the 2004 Molde Jazz Festival). He is member of various formations of Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, with whom he also grossed CDs. He also worked in a trio Gammalgrass ( with Stian Carstensen and Ole Morten Vågan ) and The Scarlatti ensemble ( with Kim Myhr, Eirik Hegdal and Marianne Baudouin Lie). In addition, he has performed with Siri Gjæres Trønderhøns and as a guest musician on the album banjovi on ( with Finn Guttormsen, Stian Carstensen, Haakon Askeland, Kjartan Iversen and Knut Hem ). In 2007 he went with Thomas Dybdahl on tour. In the field of jazz, he participated 2000-2011 in 12 recording sessions, about 2008 Jon Larsen's album The Jimmy Carl Black Story.
