Paseky nad Jizerou

Paseky ( German Pasek ) is in the valley of the Jizera ( Iser) municipality located in Okres Semily, Liberec Region in the Czech Republic.

Geography

The mountain village is located in the north of the country in the field of the Giant Mountains National Park. The highest point of the municipality is the summit Bila skala (964 m ), the deepest point is the water level of the Jizera (476 m). A large part of the area covered spruce forests.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1654. The inhabitants were mainly engaged in commercial activities. In the 17th century worked in Paseky some glass manufacturers; in the district Havírna mentioned the remains of a mine have received; the local tradition speaks of a silver mine. Widespread was the craft of weaving. 1869 were counted with 1710 inhabitants in Paseky 212 houses.

Although exclusively inhabited by Czechs, the village was annexed to the German Reich during the Second World War. After the war, emigrated to the majority of residents. Most homes since then include the Foreign and used as weekend and holiday homes. Currently, only 251 permanent residents live in Paseky. The main source of income is tourism. The town has five ski lifts and slopes ten.

There is a local partnership with the Polish Jeżów Sudecki.

Attractions

The Baroque Church of St. Wenceslas dates back to 1789. Parsonage in a museum is set up, which presents the folk culture of the 19th century.

Sons and daughters of the town

  • In the 19th century, the village teacher Věnceslav Metelka founded († 1867) in Paseky a music school, which was known throughout the region. Its focus was on the violin and the instrument. Metelka served the writers Karel Václav Rais as a model for his novel Zapadlí vlastenci ( " The spilled patriots" ) of 1893.
  • Johann Schowanek, the founder of wood products and game manufacturer Schowanek, was born here on 24 April 1868.
