Phoenix Islands

The group of the Phoenix Islands are one of three island groups in the island nation of Kiribati in the central Pacific Ocean. The archipelago is located south of the equator, north of Samoa, east of Gilbert and Elliceinseln and west of the Line Islands. They consist of eight (mostly ) uninhabited, far-flung atolls, the nearly 28 square kilometers are great together, and two separate coral reefs that are permanently flooded and have no land. In the area of ​​the large lagoons (the largest lagoon of Kanton around 50 km ² ) is not included, but only those lagoons which are completely cut off from the sea and therefore constitute inland waters. The U.S. territories Baker Island and Howland Island are upstream of the islands in the north.

History

1889, the Phoenix Islands came into British possession. The atolls Canton and Enderbury were as U.S. military bases of the United States from 1939 co-managed ( condominium ). The settlement was abandoned after the dry period from 1955 to 1964. Since 1979, the archipelago is part of the island nation of Kiribati. 2006, the Phoenix Islands and the surrounding maritime area it has been declared by the Government of Kiribati to the marine reserve Phoenix Islands Protected Area ( PIPA for short ), whose area was extended on 28 January 2008 to more than 410,000 km ². In August 2010, the reserve was included in the UNESCO list of World Natural Heritage.
