Poplar DLR station

Poplar is a station on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR ) in the London Borough London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is located in the Travelcard Zone 2 on Aspen Way in Poplar district.

Poplar is one of the busiest stations, since four of the five DLR sections meet: Westward towards Bank and Tower Gateway, south towards Lewisham, eastwards towards Beckton and King George V and to the north towards Stratford.

History

The station was opened on 31 August 1987. She was initially very basic and consisted of three tracks and two short platforms, each 30 meters in length. Immediately west of it, the three sections of the base network were connected by a simple track triangle. The distinctive, far higher than expected increase in passenger numbers made ​​at the beginning of the 1990s, a complete construction of the new station under running operation necessary. Instead of the wye was a complex and powerful crossroads building, there was added a fourth track and the length of the two central platforms has been doubled. Finally, it was opened on 28 March 1994, the route towards Beckton.

The area north of the West India Docks was opened up during the heyday of the Docklands by railway lines. There were two stations named Poplar, but not at the site of today's DLR station:

  • The station Poplar London and Blackwall Railway was located where today the station is Blackwall. It was opened on 1845 and was until May 3, 1926 in operation.
  • The Poplar Station ( East India Road) of the North London Railway was in operation from 1866 to 1944. He lay on the East India Dock Road at the site of today's station All Saints.
