President of Nauru

The President of Nauru, officially english President of Nauru, is both head of state and head of government in the parliamentary democratic Republic of Nauru. Since June 11, 2013 President Baron Waqa is in office.

Election and duties

The Nauruan Parliament is elected usually every three years and elects a president who is usually chosen according to the national legislative elections of the newly elected MPs with a relative majority. There is the system of government of the parliament bound executive power.

Residence of the President

The official presidential residence was the former Bush Lodge in Aiwo above the loading cranes. The building was burned down during demonstrations against the then President René Harris and his lavish financial and refugee policy in 2001.
