Lagumot Harris

Lagumot Gagiemem Nimidere Harris ( born December 28, 1938 in Nauru; † 8 September 1999 in Melbourne ) was a nauruischer politician and former President of the Republic of Nauru from 19 April 1978 to 15 May 1978 and 21 November 1995 to 11 November 1996. He was married and the father of ten children.

Harris initially worked as a pastor of the Nauruan CDF (Nauru Congregational Church ). However, he turned away from this and founded in 1976 in Boe the Independent Church, which won at the beginning of many followers. In 1978 he was elected by Parliament as President.

Harris was in contrast to other Nauruan politicians largely respected person without intrigues and affairs. In the " no-fly " Air Nauru in Australia in November 1996, when the chairman of the airline was dismissed for bad office management, Harris had to give up after a no-confidence vote in the presidential Bernard Dowiyogo. Dowiyogo sat on the Australian Ken McDonald as the new chairman of the Air Nauru. Previously, Harris visited during his state visit Manila. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation.
