Baron Waqa

Baron Divavesi Waqa ( b. 1959 ) is a politician and nauruischer since June 2013 President of Nauru. He was elected at the last parliamentary elections in May 2003 for the constituency of Boe together with Kinza Clodumar the Nauruan Parliament. During the presidential Ludwig Scotty was Waqa interior and minister of education, but this post had to leave again when Scotty was defeated in a vote of no confidence René Harris. He remained still as a member in Parliament.

On 23 April 2004 Waqa took along with his parliamentary colleagues Kieren Keke, David Adeang and Fabian Ribauw during violent protests in part at the international airport in Yaren. It has been demonstrated against the government policy regarding the Afghan asylum seekers in Australian detention center on Nauru and the entry of the Flotilla of Hope as well as against the " deadlock " of Parliament. It threatened all four because of the participation of up to 14 years in prison. The prison sentences were lifted when Ludwig Scotty on the following June 22 regained the presidency. Waqa was thereby appointed Minister of Education by Scotty again.

On June 11, 2013 Waqa was elected to succeed Sprent Dabwidos president of Nauru.

Waqa is also one of the few composers in Nauru, but composing music is his pastime. His works are always on the Aiue Boulevard, but are not known outside of Nauru.
