Provideniya

Provideniya (Russian Провидения ) is an urban-type settlement with 1970 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the northeastern part of the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug in the far east of Russia.

Geography

The settlement is located on a fjord on the Bering Strait near the date line. It is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons Provideniya ( Prowidenski ).

A lot of the residents are Yupik, members of an Eskimo tribe.

Climate

The climate is arctic, where the winters do not be so strictly by the coastal location.

History

With the planned establishment of a settlement was begun in 1937, having already since 1928 on the natural harbor of a camp was formed. It was named after the bay, Russian for Providence. On 10 May 1946, the status of an urban-type settlement was awarded.

In the Soviet era Provideniya was a mainly military harbor, which was protected by its location on the fjord from the open Bering Strait.

After the end of the Cold War, there were through tourism from nearby Alaska a certain economic recovery. Publicly known Provideniya was the "Friendship Flight" in December 1988, in which an American airline (Alaska Airlines) had approached the Russian site for the first time.

In Provideniya a museum of history and culture Chukotka exists.

Economy and infrastructure

Provideniya has a sea port and three kilometers from the small Buchta Provideniya Airport ( Provideniya Bay, IATA code PVS).
