Red Dot

The Red Dot Design Award is one of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen advertised internationally recognized design competition in which the " Red Dot ", a red dot is awarded.

Overview

The Red Dot Design Award is awarded by an international jury of those skilled in the work, that have an outstanding design quality. Works, which are found to be particularly successful are awarded the Red Dot. Outstanding work will receive the title Red Dot: Best of the Best The winning works will be exhibited for at least one year at the Red Dot Design Museum, a design museum in Essen. The initiator of the award is Peter Zec.

Designers and manufacturers can register their work for the annual competition. The registration is free of charge. On the excellent participants, which may lead the Red Dot on their products, as well as additional costs for the mandatory entry in the yearbook, exclusive use of the label and the presentation in the exhibition to come.

Categories

The award will be given in three categories: product design, communication design and design concept.

Product Design

The since 1955, awarded by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen price design innovations in 2000 Red Dot Award: Product Design renamed. This goes back to the practice, to highlight good product design with a red dot. Criteria include degree of innovation, functionality and ecological compatibility. It can be registered products from more than 20 areas. Among other things, in the following product categories:

  • Living and sleeping, for example, furniture, room equipment, textiles
  • Household, such as household appliances, washing machines, vacuum cleaners
  • Outdoor, recreation, sports and fun, such as camping equipment, bicycles, toys
  • Interior design elements, such as building equipment, windows, carpets
  • Industry and crafts, such as machinery, tools, operating systems
  • Vehicles (land, water, air and space), such as automobiles, aircraft, ships
  • Bathroom and Wellness, eg furniture, saunas, solariums
  • Life science and medicine, such as laboratory equipment, medical furniture and equipment
  • Office, such as office furniture, reception areas, desks
  • Entertainment technology and cameras, such as TVs, cameras, remote controls
  • Computer and Information Technology, such as printers, monitors, notebooks
  • Fashion, lifestyle and accessories, such as glasses, Tascehn, Street Fashion
  • Lighting and lamps, such as indoor and outdoor lighting

The Red Dot Award: Product Design is awarded traditionally in July at the Aalto Theatre in Essen. At the regularly changing jury includes design experts as Rido Busse, Roy Fleetwood, Kenneth Grange and Jimmy Choo. Communication Design

Since 1993, the award will be given for communication design. The award ceremony has moved from Essen to Berlin 2011.

In 2013, there were 6,812 entries from 49 countries. The award was 575 times Red Dot, Red Dot: Best of the Best 62 times and the red dot: grand prix award 10 times. With the honorary title Red Dot: Design Agency of the Year, the Agency Mutabor was excellent. Go to Red Dot: Client of the Year Audi was chosen.

Design Concept

Since 2005 there has been developed together with Ken Koo Price Red Dot: Design Concept, the concepts and prototypes dedicated to. This is organized by the Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore. 2013 were submitted to the competition 4,394 works from 57 countries.

Red Dot: Design Team of the Year

The Honorary Title Red Dot: Design Team of the Year is awarded annually since 1988 to a design team to honor its merits special. Teams must have made a continuous innovative work. Is handing over the award at the Product Design event in Essen.

Red Dot: Agency of the Year

The Red Dot: Agency of the Year is awarded every year since 2008 to a design office or a communications agency. The designer must have done many years of outstanding work in communication design. The price is passing to the "Stylus" touring in the Red Dot Gala celebrating the Red Dot Award: Communication Design in Berlin.
