Ribeauvillé

Ribeauvillé ( German: Rappoltsweiler; Alsatian: Rappschwihr ) is a French town with 4841 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. The city is the seat of the prefecture (French Sous- préfecture ) of the arrondissements Ribeauvillé, capital of Canton Ribeauvillé and seat of the municipal association Ribeauvillé.

Geography

Ribeauvillé located 15 kilometers north- west of Colmar, on the eastern edge of the Vosges at the mouth of the valley of the Strictly Bach. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges and extends from the Rhine Valley on the Wine shaped by cultures foothills to the summit of the 992 meter high Taennchel in the West. Through the town the Alsace Wine Route runs (Route des Vins d' Alsace). A few kilometers to the east is the Ribeauvillé railway station on the route Strasbourg- Basel.

History

Ribeauvillé 759 is first mentioned as Ratbaldouilare; other answers are Ratbertouillare ( 768), Ratpoldesuilare ( 896 ) and Rapolswilre ( 1162 ). The French place name is mentioned as early as the late Middle Ages ( 1344 Ribauvillers ). 1290 Ribeauvillé first attested as a city. Since 1038, the gentlemen are to Rappoltstein in documents identified who exercised the rights of the city's governors until 1673. After they died, the rule Rappoltstein fell ( Ribeaupierre ) and with it the city of Palatinate - Birkenfeld, 1734 Palatinate - Birkenfeld -Zweibrücken. 1680/81, the city and the government Rappoltstein the Holy Roman Empire came under the sovereignty of France, but the French administration was introduced in the wake of the dissolution of the feudal lords with the French Revolution of 1789 and the 1801 also sanctioned by international law.

From 1871 to 1918 the city was the administrative center of the Alsatian -Lorraine circle Rappoltsweiler.

The old town of Ribeauvillé is characterized by numerous houses from the 16th and 17th centuries. Dominant medieval monuments are the parish church St.Grégoire -le- Grand and the butcher Tower (Tour of Boucher, both from the 13th century). Overlooked is the place of the three ruins Ulrich Castle ( ancestral seat of the lords Rappoltstein ) Girsberg and Hohrappoltstein.

Economy

Because of its beautiful scenic location on the wine route, close to the Vosges and the numerous monuments Ribeauvillé is a popular tourist destination, tourism, therefore, an important economic factor. An important role is also the vineyard ( 321 hectares ) and the catering trade. In the city the mineral water bottlers Société des Eaux (brand name " Carol") is also located. The Japanese electronics giant Sony has a branch in Ribeauvillé.

Customs

On the first Sunday in September Ribeauvillé is still the scene of a traditional festival, the " Pfifferdaj " ( Fête des Ménétriers, also Jour of Fifres; German Pfeifertag ) on which street musicians from across the region its former aristocratic patron, the Seigneur de Ribeaupierre, confirm the oath of allegiance.

Environment

In the mountains west of the city lie which emerged from a hermitage Sanctuary of Notre -Dame-de - Dusenbach, the ruins of the monastery and the ruins Sylo Bilstein. On the summit ridge of Taennchel possesses several interesting rock formations, especially the remains of the enigmatic " Heidenmauer " ( Mur païen ), a 2.3 km long fortification of unknown age. Other worthwhile attractions in the vicinity include the imposing castle of Haut- Kœnigsbourg ( Hohkönigsburg ), the Montagne des singes ( Monkey Mountain; turned hegter forest with introduced from the Atlas Mountains Berber monkeys) and the Volerie des Aigles ( Birds of Prey ), each located near Kintzheim.
