Robert Glasper

Robert Glasper ( born April 5, 1978 in Houston, Texas) is an American jazz pianist.

Life and work

Glasper was musically strongly influenced by his mother, who was gospel singer, but also a band directed and appeared with her ​​in the local blues and jazz clubs. At the age of twelve years he played for the first time in the church piano. He attended the prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, before he moved to New York to study at the University of The New School. While still a student, he played with Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett and Russell Malone. He then worked with Roy Hargrove, Carmen Lundy and Terence Blanchard ( Bounce, 2003). In 2004, he released his debut album, Mood, which a year later, the first album on the major label Blue Note Records, canvas followed. His mother and her second husband in 2004 of a murder victim. The music brought him over it, he said in an interview that he had lived out his grief on the piano. In 2007 he released his third album In My Element.

Glasper was also influenced by Hip -Hop; therefore, there was a collaboration with artists of this genre, including Bilal, Mos Def, Common, Talib Kweli, Slum Village, Jay -Z, J Dilla and Erykah Badu. In addition to his jazz trio he also occurs together with Derrick Hodge, Chris Dave and Casey Benjamin as The Robert Glasper Experiment in appearance, where he experimented with the fusion of jazz and hip -hop. Glasper also worked with Jeremy Pelt, Marcus Strickland and Jaleel Shaw.

In 2012 he was awarded the Rising Star Award as a jazz musician of the year in the Downbeat critics polls and 2013 the album Black Radio with the Grammy Award for Best R & B Album award.
