There are two versions of the Project 588 class, called I ( 11 vessels ), and second series (38 ships), which differ in number of passengers, maximum load and internal equipment. In the Soviet Union they were used as domestic passenger traffic and tourist ships on the Volga, Kama, Don, Neva and Yenisei. For their time, they were comfortable and reliable ships with a fine stream line shape. There was no fixed system in their designation; The ships were named in the majority by Soviet or Russian celebrities or fairy tale characters, such as Ilya Muromets ( Ilya Muromets ), Cosmonaut Ju. Gagarin, IS Turgenev, Ivan Susanin, Aleksandr Nevski (Alexander Nevsky ), others have geographical names such as Ural or Elbrus. The German origin is reflected in the names of some ships like Karl Marks (Karl Marx ), Friedrich Engels, Karl Liebknecht, Rosa Luxembourg and Ernst Thalmann.

Technical Description

The ships with five decks of three diesel engines of the type R6DV48 driven by the motor manufacturer VEB heavy engineering " Karl Liebknecht " ( SKL ), which act directly on the three screws. Many units of the Project 588 class are still in service, some of them were shut down and only seven ships have been decommissioned. A ship sank, three were burned and another three were decommissioned and scrapped. As a result of continued fallen demand in the internal traffic passenger ( rail, air and bus services were convenient, faster and cheaper) they are now used by various shipping companies only as a tourist ships. To improve the comfort of the tourists, many ships have been modernized through renovation of the cabins and other passenger spaces, as well as the renewal of the various ship equipment by today's standards, such as drive, safety and navigation systems.
