Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Altos Quetzaltenango-Totonicapán

The Archdiocese of Los Altos Quetzaltenango - Totonicapán (Latin: Archidioecesis Altensis, Quetzaltenanguensis - Totonicapensis ) is located in Guatemala Roman Catholic diocese based in Quetzaltenango. It comprises the departments of Quetzaltenango and Totonicapán. In Totonicapán is the Co-Cathedral San Miguel Arcángel.

History

Pope Benedict XV. founded the bishopric of Quetzaltenango, Los Altos on 27 July 1921 cession of territory of the Archdiocese of Guatemala, where it was a suffragan. A part of the territory it lost on 10 March 1951 the dioceses of San Marcos and Solola.

With the Apostolic Constitution En spirituali christifidelium it was raised on February 13, 1996 Metropolitan diocese and adopted its present name. On 31 December the same year it lost part of its territory to the diocese Suchitepéquez - Retalhuleu.
