Roman Catholic Diocese of Krishnagar

The diocese of Krishnagar (Latin: Dioecesis Krishnagarensis ) is a located in India Roman Catholic diocese based in Krishnanagar, West Bengal.

History

Pope Pius IX. founded the mission sui juris Central Bengal with the Apostolic Constitution regno Christi at the 1855 cession of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate of Western Bengal.

On July 19, 1870 was elevated to the Apostolic Prefecture. On September 1, 1886, it was elevated to a diocese, which was the Archdiocese of Calcutta assumed as suffragan.

The following year, the diocese took its present name. The cathedral was destroyed by an earthquake in 1897 and rebuilt two years later.

It later lost part of its territory in favor of the establishment of new dioceses:
