Roniel Iglesias

Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo ( born August 14, 1988 in Pinar del Río ) is a Cuban boxer. He was Pan-American champion in 2008, 2009 and 2010, winner of the Pan American Games 2011 bronze medalist at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, 2009 World Champion and Olympic champion in 2012.

Career

Roniel Iglesias comes from a boxing family enthusiastic. He started at a young age with the boxes and was already 16 years, not only to the best Cuban junior boxers, but also to the best Cuban seniors. He starts for the power center of Pinar del Río. In 2005 he started, not yet 17 years old at the Cuban Veterans Championships in flyweight and was to the surprise of all the experts, after five partially defeated much older boxer, with a points victory ( 27:8 ) in the final over Kadel Luis Cuban Senior Master. He profited, however, believe that the Cuban world champion was forced to retire due to injury in this weight class Yuriolkis Gamboa during the Tournament. In 2006 Roniel Iglesias took to the Cuban Championships Bantamweight the 3rd place, after he had made it clear in the semifinal against Idel Torriente lost by points ( 11:28 ). In the Cuban Championship in 2007, he started at lightweight and triumphed over Yoendri Leyva, Orelis Pérez Díaz and Vladimir. But in the final he defeated the reigning world champion Yordenis Ugas convincingly on points ( 8:21 ) and had to settle for runner-up title content. Against the same boxer he was defeated in the final of the Giraldo Córdova Cardín - Tournament in Santa Clara ( 6:15 ). He came there to five wins, inter alia, in the semi-final against Uranchimegiin Mönkh - Erdene, Mongolia ( 6:4 ), and won the final convincingly against the 17 year old American Frankie Gomez ( 8-2 ) with which he crowned his career by winning the world title.

2010 won the Pan-American Championships Iglesias again with a final victory over Juan Pablo Romero, Mexico ( 10:2 ), and in the following year the Pan American Games with a final victory over Valentino Knowles, Bahamas ( 22:14 ). At the world championships in the same year Iglesias surprisingly lost already his first fight against eventual runners- Denys Berinchyk, Ukraine ( 19:19 ). The so missed qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games after he won the U.S. Olympic qualifying tournament in Rio de Janeiro, where he among other things, to Siegen in the semi-final against César Villarraga, Colombia ( 14:7 ), and in the final against Francisco Vargas, Puerto Rico ( 12:7 ), won the first place and thus qualified for the Olympic Games in London.

At the Olympics he beat in the preliminary round César Villarraga, Colombia ( 20:9 ), in the second round the reigning world champion Éverton Lopes, Brazil (18-15 ) in the quarterfinals against Oktamjon Raxmonov, Uzbekistan ( 21:15 ), and in the semi-finals the bronze medalist Vincenzo Mangiacapre, Italy ( 15:8 ). In the final he beat then Denys Berinchyk, Ukraine ( 22:15 ), and thus retaliated for the early defeat at the World Championships last year. Iglesias won so that the Olympic gold medal in light welterweight. Iglesias ended the year by winning the national championships.

International ban by the Cuban Association

In August 2013, the Cuban Boxing Association (FCB ) imposed shortly before the planned departure to a meet against Mexico one year of international competition suspension against Iglesias.
