Royal Society of Arts

The Royal Society of Arts ( RSA), actually: Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce ( Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, the industrial products and commercial enterprise ) is a British cultural institution that has taken on the task, a platform to provide for critical discussion and new ideas so as to promote the education in the 21st century. The company acts according to four principles: autonomy, commitment, honesty and openness.

The Royal Society was founded in 1754 and has its headquarters in London. Patron is Elizabeth II, President since 2011 Princess Anne.

History

The RSA was founded in 1754 by William Shipley and had the Dublin Society for Improving Husbandry, Manufactures and other useful arts as a model. In 1774 the company moved into a building in the center of London a that of the Adam Brothers ( James Adam and Robert Adam ) was designed. This building in John Adam Street is still used by the RSA and includes the Great Room painting by the Irish artist James Barry. In addition, the company has expanded over the years to other buildings.

The RSA organized in 1760 with great success Britain's first exhibition of contemporary art. Due to this success, the Royal Academy of Arts was founded in 1768 by Sir Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds, two early members of the RSA was founded.

The RSA was awarded in 1847 the special status of the Royal Charter (Royal Charter). In 1876, the RSA, the National Training School for Music in London, which later became the Royal College of Music. 1908 King Edward VII granted the use Royal on behalf of the RSA.

In 1936, the RSA awarded for the first time the distinction Royal Designer for Industry (RDI ). This award is intended to honor those who have created excellent design in the field of manufacturing and industry. The Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry was established then and is designed to promote design and the application for the industry. Professionals from different fields such as engineering, furniture, clothing and textile design, graphic design, theater and film design are represented in the Faculty.

An example of the success of the RSA was recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary. The dictionary collected in 1980 from a Journal of RSA the first use of the word sustainability (sustainability ) in relation to environmental economics.

Membership

Worldwide, there are about 27,000 members ( fellows ) who pursue the objectives and principles of the organization in more than 70 countries. Among the members, there are members of all professional groups, such as Entrepreneurs, scientists, artists, journalists, architects, engineers, commercial clerk and other professional groups.

The paid membership is on the recording guidelines open to anyone who uses in a particular way in a society near- field for the common good, and can be done by self-nominations to the proposal of another member or by invitation by a member of the Board of Trustees of the RSA. In addition to the admission fee a regular annual membership fee is payable. Members have the right to use the abbreviation FRSA ( Fellow of the RSA) to lead a so-called suffix with comma after the last name (for example, "John Doe, FRSA "); but this is not, this is an academic degree, an academic honor or a religious order.

Recent Activity

The organization is registered in the Royal Charter and recognized as a charity in England.

Each year a number of honorary degrees will be awarded, among others, the Albert Medal, the Benjamin Franklin Medal, and the Bicentenary Medal. Medal carriers include Nelson Mandela and Professor Stephen Hawking.

In the UK and Ireland, the RSA provides various regional activities to stimulate the members for mutual exchange. In addition, the RSA is represented in Belgium, Australia, India, South Africa and the USA.

Events

The Company performs a variety of public events designed to encourage the free and progressive thinking. After such an event, audio and video files on the website are provided. The building of the RSA can be rented by non-members for conferences, parties and weddings.

Projects

In July 2008, the RSA to support a school in Tipton, which was opened as the RSA Academy in September 2008 began.

Current projects deal with the themes of art and ecology, civil rights, design and society, education, public services and technologies in cold climates. Earlier projects included the provision of drinking water in developing countries, the rethinking of intellectual property ( Published as the Adelphi Charter ), and studies on the control of international migration.
