Rudolf Kárpáti

Rudolf Karpati [ ka ː rudolf rpa ː ti ] ( born July 17, 1920 in Budapest, † February 1, 1999 ) was a Hungarian saber fencer.

Originally intended Kárpáti a career as a violinist, and graduated from the Conservatory in Budapest. But as he fought on the side, his arm was too hard for the violin. He completed his studies as a musicologist.

Kárpáti took in 1948 for the first time in the Olympic Games and won with the team the Hungarian saber fencer his first Olympic gold medal. This success with the team he repeated in 1952, 1956 and 1960.

In the individual competition he won in 1956 and 1960 gold. With six Olympic gold medals Kárpáti one of the most successful athletes in the Olympic history. 1954 and 1959 he was also individual champion, with the team he won seven world titles.

After his career, he remained as a judge his sport faithful. In international Fencing Federation ( FIE ), he worked in various positions. So he looked at the introduction of electronic scoring display in saber fencing.
