At the Tour de France he took over after the fall of etamäßigen captain Christian Vande Velde, this role and achieved a surprisingly good seventh place overall. In 2012 he succeeded the overall victory at the Giro d' Italia. After losing the pink jersey twice to Joaquim Rodriguez, he could be saved in the final time trial in Milan and thus win the first Canadian to a Grand Tour.

After the due doping offenses already punished Michael Rasmussen in a book stated that he had been instructed in 2003 Hesjedal in the use of EPO in the year, admitted Hesjedal end of October 2013, a publicly that he had used EPO in 2003 as doping. The Canadian Anti-Doping Agency CCES advisers indicated that Hejedal had admitted in the spring of 2013, before the accusation by Rasmussen, opposite the CCES and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency USADA and cooperates with these institutions. The CCES however, expressed disappointment that Hesjedal took off the confession only ten years after the offense.
