Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer

Saint- Mandrier- sur -Mer is a commune with 5708 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Saint- Mandrier- sur- Mer is located on the peninsula of Presqu'ile de Cépet which, connected only by a narrow sandbar to the mainland that juts out into the Bay of Toulon. To the south, the rocky coast largely falls steeply down to the sea. To the north is protected in a far indented bay of the harbor to the old town center. The highest point of the peninsula, the geologically one with its shale formations to the Massif des Maures, is located 124 meters above the sea.

History

1268 was first spoken in the sources of Ecclesia Sanctae a Mandreae whose name is on Mandrianus and Flavian, two Saxon soldiers in Ostrogothic army, back, who were baptized in Toulon and settled on the peninsula.

In 1950, Saint- Mandrier- sur -Mer was the separation of La Seyne -sur -Mer independent municipality.

Attractions

  • Along the coast, around the small harbor, lies the old fishing village.
  • The former Marine Hospital (now the mechanic school) was built by convicts from the prison in Toulon.

George Sand (* 1804, † 1876), French writer, describes in her novel Tamaris the peninsula and its neighborhood in the 19th century.

Saint- Mandrier is a seaside resort with a fishing port. In the surrounding area of the municipality of vegetables are grown.
