To the west of St. Johann im Walde, the village of Hopfgarten in Defereggen, in northern communities Matrei and Kals am Grossglockner, to the east the municipality Ainet and to the south the city borders Schlaiten to St. Johann im Walde.

2012 lived 291 people in the town of St. Johann im Walde. Judging by the number of inhabitants of St. Johann im Walde at this time the second smallest municipality in the district of Lienz. According to the 2001 census, 98.0 % of the population were Austrian citizens (Tirol: 90.6 % ) until the beginning of 2012 the value dropped only slightly to 97.3 %. Of the population in 2012, only 3.4 % were born overseas, these people came almost exclusively from the EU Member States. (Tirol: 83.4 %) to the Roman Catholic Church in 2001, 98.0 % of the population known, only one person was without religious confession, three people were Protestant.

The average age of the community population in 2001 more strongly on the national average. 18.8 % of residents of St. Johann im Walde were younger than 15 years ( Tirol: 18.4%), 58.7 % from 15 to 59 years old (Tirol: 63.0 %). The percentage of residents over 59 stood at 22.5 % above the national average of 18.6 %. The average age of the population of St. Johann im Walde changed massively in the sequence. The proportion of under-15s fell by 1 January 2012 slightly to 17.5 %, while the share of people between 15 and 59 years rocketed to 66.7 %. The proportion of 59 -year-old, however, declined to just 15.8 %. Marital status in 2001 52.0 % of residents of St. Johann im Walde were single, 42.6 % married, widowed, 5.0% divorced and 0.3%.

Demographics

The population of St. Johann im Walde evolved considerably weaker than the population growth of Tyrol and the district of Lienz, in particular in the second half of the 20th century. As of 1869, the population of St. Johann hardly changed at first, until 1910-1923, there was a larger population growth. This, however, no trend could develop, which is why the population 1910-1951 repeatedly rose and fell again. It was only after 1951 it became a longer- term growth, during which time the population to 1971 by about 25 % rose to a record level of 356 inhabitants. Since 1971, however, the population of St. Johann level decreased continuously, so that the population in 2012 only reached the initial value of 1951. Between 2002 and 2011 St. Johann lost this one due to a slightly negative birth rate and a slightly negative migration balance inhabitants.
