Schelto van Heemstra

Baron van Heemstra Schelto ( born November 14, 1807 in Groningen, † December 20, 1864 in Maartensdijk ) was a liberal, conservative later Dutch statesman. 1861-1862 he was Chairman of the Council of Ministers.

Van Heemstra studied law at the universities of Franeker and Groningen. There he received his doctorate 1830. Starting 1844, he was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General, and one of the nine members who joined under the leadership of Johan Rudolf Thorbecke for constitutional reform. 1848-1849 he was Minister for Ecclesiastical Affairs ( except for those of the Catholic Church ). After holding high official positions in the sequence, he was Minister of the Interior 1860-1862 and Chairman of the Council of Ministers. With his now clearly conservative politics he was strongly criticized by liberal supporters Thor Becke.
