Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival

The Schleswig -Holstein Music Festival ( SHMF ) is one of the largest classical music festivals in the world. It takes place since 1986 every year in the months of July and August at various venues in Schleswig -Holstein and in the adjacent Lower Saxony, Denmark and Hamburg.

The concerts take place in unusual venues such as farmhouses, barns, churches, castle parks, ferry and dockyard buildings in part. Since 1996 there has been an annual national focus. Since 2002, The Jazz Festival Jazz Baltica part of the Schleswig- Holstein Music Festival.

Establishment and management of

The festival, whose foundation event with the participation of the main initiator Justus Frantz and also counted among the founding members Barschel ( as narrator speak in the Carnival of the Animals in the musical part of the program) already took place on 5 July 1985 at the Kieler Schloss, 1986 was first conducted. Justus Frantz remained over nine years the director of the Schleswig- Holstein Music Festival. From 1996 to 1998 Franz Auer Will was director of the SHMF. Together with Christoph Eschenbach as artistic director headed Rolf Beck 1999-2002 the festival. From 2002 to 2013 was Rolf Beck sole artistic director of the festival. Since October 1, 2013, Dr. Christian Kuhnt the SHMF. Administrative center of the festival is supported by a foundation, the castle Rantzau historistisches a palace in the center of Lübeck, which was renovated at great expense by the German Foundation for Monument Protection.

The Jazz Festival Jazz Baltica was conducted in 1991 for the first time since 2002 and belongs to the Schleswig -Holstein Music Festival.

Orchestral and Choral Academy and master classes

Among the three major educational institutions of SHMF include the Orchestra Academy, the Choir Academy and master classes. The Orchestral Academy was founded in 1987 by Leonard Bernstein and sets to determine each year from more than 100 young musicians from all over the world who are selected through auditions. By 2010, the country Salzau was the summer residence of the Orchestra Academy, since 2011, the Orchestra Academy in Rendsburg is 'established', the samples are held in the Thormann Hall housed the musicians are in Nordkolleg Rendsburg. Each year, internationally renowned conductors work with the Orchestra Academy. Chief conductor is Christoph Eschenbach.

The master classes will be held in the Musikhochschule Lübeck. Well-known instrumentalists and singers teach there during the festival music students from around the world.

The association of Schleswig- Holstein Music Festival e.V.

The association of Schleswig- Holstein Music Festival has approximately 3,000 members. The Board of Trustees, whose members are appointed by the Prime Minister of Schleswig- Holstein, has around 80 personalities from business, media, culture and politics. These Councils are active not only at the venues. As full members and members of the board to support the full-time staff with their many years of practical experience festival.

Promotion

Many businesses support the festival financially. As long-standing main sponsors the Savings Banks Financial Group contributed ( savings banks in Schleswig -Holstein, HSH Nordbank, LBS building society and provincial insurance), Audi AG, NordwestLotto Schleswig -Holstein, the E.ON Hanse AG and Media North German Broadcasting in 2010, the financially most important contribution. Overall, there were 2010 grants of more than 70 concert sponsors and more than 50 members of the business initiative business and music.

The festivals and their country focus

Prior to 1996, only one country focus was occasionally set, sometimes two or three at the same time. In the actual sense embodied and the country focus is advertised in advance, however, only since 1996.

Paul Hindemith Prize

As part of the Schleswig- Holstein Music Festival, the Paul Hindemith Prize is awarded annually to outstanding contemporary composers since 1990.

Leonard Bernstein Award

The price is reminiscent of the American composer, pianist and conductor Leonard Bernstein, who was involved in the early years of SHMF as a conductor. The prize is awarded annually since 2002 by the Festival exceptionally talented young musicians.
