Selby (District)

Selby is a District in the county of North Yorkshire in England. Administrative center is the city of Selby. Other important towns are Escrick, Hemingbrough, Riccall, Sherburn -in- Elmet and Tadcaster. There are twinned with Carentan in France and Filderstadt in Germany.

The district was formed on 1 April 1974 and evolved from the merger of the Urban District Selby and parts of the Rural District Derwent, Hemsworth, Osgoldcross and Tadcaster.

On 1 April 1996 the following villages were separated and the Unitary Authority of the newly formed city of York added: Acaster Malbis, Askham Bryan, Askham Richard, Bishopthorpe, Copmanthorpe, Deighton, Dunnington, Elvington, Fulford, Heslington, Kexby, Naburn and Wheldrake. By this measure, Selby is geographically isolated from the rest of the county of North Yorkshire.
