Shuzo Matsuoka

Shuzo Matsuoka (Japanese松冈 修造, Matsuoka Shuzo; born November 6, 1967 in the prefecture of Tokyo) is a former Japanese tennis player.

Life

Matsuoka, whose father Isao Matsuoka since the mid-1970s had held senior positions in the film studio Toho, 1986 was a professional tennis player. In 1989 he reached the final of the ATP tournament in Wellington, where he was defeated Kelly Evernden. In the same year he won in Auckland on the side of Steve Guy his first and only doubles title. In 1992 he won in Seoul his only single title on the ATP World Tour. He was the first Japanese, which this was done. He also reached the final of the Queen 's Club Championships, where he lost to Wayne Ferreira. Between 1991 and 1995 he won three singles titles on the ATP Challenger Tour. In total he won during his career a single and a doubles title on the ATP World Tour. Its highest listing in the tennis world ranking he reached in 1992 with position 46 in singles, and in 1989 with position 95 in doubles.

His best result at a Grand Slam tournament, he reached in 1995, when he penetrated to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, where he was the eventual winner Pete Sampras defeated in four sets. In the doubles competition, he stood at the Australian Open and the U.S. Open once each in the second round.

Matsuoka played between 1987 and 1997 31 single and five double batches for the Japanese Davis Cup team. In the Summer Olympics 1988 Summer Olympics 1992 Summer Olympics 1996, he went to Japan. In his first appearance in 1988, he played both single as well as double, but different on the side of Toshihisa Tsuchihashi out in the first round. Even in his individual lots he never came out on the first round, he defeated Emilio Sánchez Vicario in 1988, 1992 Renzo Furlan and 1996 against Tim Henman. In 1989 he participated with Masako Yanagi at the Hopman Cup, they lost in the first round against the Czechoslovaks Helena Suková and Miloslav Mečíř, where Matsuoka won his singles match against Mečíř in two sets.

After his retirement from professional sport in 1998, he appeared frequently on television in Japan. He is with Emiko Taguchi, a former presenter of TV Tokyo, married and has three children.
