In his professional career (from 1989), he won 15 singles titles. In the 1992 Olympics he won the silver medal at the side of Piet Norval. In the same year, he scored at the Australian Open by reaching the semifinals his best result at a Grand Slam tournament; In 2003 he succeeded in doing so again. His best finish in the ATP world rankings he reached on 8 May 1995 with 6th place
In 2000, Ferreira won on the side of Amanda Coetzer the Hopman Cup. After the U.S. Open 2004, he announced his retirement from professional sports. In 2005, he was the occasion of the Davis Cup match against the South Africans a unique Germany comeback; he denied doing two games, he lost both.
