2003 Australian Open

The Australian Open took in 2003 from 13 to 27 January in Melbourne instead.

Defender of the single were Thomas Johansson in the men's and Jennifer Capriati with the ladies. In the men's doubles were Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor, in women's doubles Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova the defending champions. Daniela Hantuchova and Kevin Ullyett were the defending champions in the mixed doubles.

In the Men's Singles Andre Agassi was able to achieve its overall eighth and final Grand Slam title. In the women's singles won the American Serena Williams. With this triumph, Williams completed a career Grand Slam and held all four Grand Slam titles simultaneously. She is the first player since Steffi Graf of managed this. The men's doubles were able to win the French Michaël Llodra and Fabrice Santoro, and in women's doubles won the siblings Serena and Venus Williams. In Martina Navratilova and Leander Paes Mixed won.

German men at the Australian Open

Rainer Schuettler

  • The Korbacher went as a seeded player (Rank 31) at the start. In the first round he had no problem with the Spaniard Albert Portas and won 6:3 6:2 6:0.
  • In round two waited with the experienced Dutchman Richard Krajicek a harder opponent shaker, but he still won 6:3 7:5 6:4.
  • In the third round would have waited for the tournament to win with the set of rank 3 Russians Marat Safin one of the top favorites. But Safin injury not even stepped on and shaker was in the second round.
  • There shakers met on the set of rank 23 American James Blake. In four sets shaker won with 6:3 6:4 1:6 6:3.
  • Reaching the quarter-finals was a huge success for shaker and opponent David Nalbandian ( placed at rank 10) seemed to come from. But shakers played the tennis of his life and won 6:3 5:7 6:1 6:0 in impressive fashion.
  • In the semifinals the next U.S. Americans waited: Andy Roddick, placed at rank 9. Once again it was brilliant and as well look the other top 10 players out of the race shaker. He won 7:5 2:6 6:3 6:3 again in four sets.
  • Shaker achieved outstanding success as the final of the Australian Open. But he had here to the set of rank two Andre Agassi no chance and lost 2:6 2:6 1:6, which is the biggest success shaker career.

Lars Burgsmüller

  • The Mülheim Burgsmüller met the Spaniard Juan Balcells in round one. Surprisingly smooth Burgsmüller won 6-4 7-5 7-5.
  • In round two waited with the set of rank 6 Swiss Roger Federer a real hurdle. Burgsmüller could not convince and lost 3:6 0:6 3:6.

Alexander Waske

  • The Frankfurt Waske came on the qualifications in the first major round and met the strong Croat Mario Ancic. Although waske had chances, but lost 3:6 4:6 6:7.

Björn Phau

  • The Darmstadt Phau came as Waske as a qualifier in the first round, where he met on the set of rank 28 Frenchman Fabrice Santoro. Phau lost 4:6 3:6 4:6.

David Prinosil

  • The Czech-born Prinosil was the third German qualifier in the first round. He hit the top 10 player Albert Costa of Spain (Rank 8), against whom he well mithielt at 4:6 1:6 6:3 6:7, but ultimately lost.

German ladies at the Australian Open

Martina Müller

  • The checkout activist Müller met in round one on the Italian Antonella Serra Zanetti, against which they could compete only in the first set, but then collapsed and lost 6:7 0:6.
  • The Berliner Roesch had to play in the first round against the law to rank 24 Russian Tatjana Panova. Although Roesch held with good, but eventually lost in three sets 6:7 6:3 2:6.

Barbara Rittner

  • The Rittner from Krefeld occurred in the first round against the local hero Evie Dominikovic. In a relatively balanced match Rittner was defeated in three sets 5:7 6:4 4:6.

Marlene Weingartner

  • The Heidelbergerin husbandmen had with the set of rank 3 US-American Jennifer Capriati a very tough draw. After clearly losing the first set of tenants caused a sensation and won a complete surprise with 2:6 7:6 6:4.
  • After the Sensation tenants had to compete in round two against the Frenchwoman Stephanie Foretz. Again husbandmen went into the third set and won again, this time with 3:6 6:1 6:2.
  • Surprisingly standing tenants in round three and met the Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual. In the third three- set match in a row Weingartner lost this round with 1:6 6:4 4:6.

Greta Arn

  • The native Hungarian Arn came in the first round against the unseeded Russian Nadia Petrova, against which they had no chance at 2:6 1:6.

Anca Barna

  • The Barna from Nuremberg played in round one against Italian Francesca Schiavone against which they surprisingly won 5:7 6:1 6:3 with something.
  • Tenants following the second round, Barna met on the set of rank 27 U.S. American Lisa Raymond. Again Barna won with a surprise, this time 6:3 6:1, so very clear.
  • Reaching the third round was a great success for Barna, where they played against none other than the world number two Venus Williams of the United States. Against the later finalist they had no chance at 1:6 4:6.
