2004 Australian Open

The Australian Open took in 2004 from January 16 to February 1 in Melbourne instead.

Titelverteider in individual were Andre Agassi in the men's and Serena Williams in the women. In the men's doubles were Michaël Llodra and Fabrice Santoro in women's doubles siblings Serena Williams and Venus Williams, Martina Navratilova, and in mixed and Leander Paes, the defending champion.

German at the Australian Open

  • Lars Müller Castle: The castle Mülheim Müller joined in round one against the Czech veteran Bohdan Ulihrach, against whom he lost in four sets 4:6, 6:3, 2:6, 1:6.
  • Tomas Behrend: The Brazilian-born Behrend played in the first round against the Austrian Jurgen Melzer. Behrend lost chance and clear with 1:6, 2:6, 2:6.
  • Rainer Schuettler: The Korbacher shaker was set as the best German in rank 6 and thus started with great hopes for the quarter-finals in the tournament. In round one he met on the Sweden's Robin Soderling. He was already 2-0 sets lead before the game tipped and he lost completely by surprise with 6:4, 6:4, 5:7, 3:6, 4:6.
  • Alexander Popp: The Sands Hausener Popp met in the first round in the Swedish rookie Joachim Johansson. Although with opportunities, but ultimately realized he lost 4:6, 6:7, 4:6.

  • Anca Barna: The from Nuremberg won her first round match against Canadian Maureen Drake almost 2:6, 6:0, 7:5. As only one of the three German ladies in round two she met on the set of rank 25 U.S. American Lisa Raymond, against which they lost 3:6, 4:6.
  • Marlene Weingartner: The Heidelbergerin met in round one already on the later finalist Kim Clijsters. No chance lost husbandmen 3:6, 2:6.
