Simushir

Simuschir (Russian Симушир; jap新知 岛, Shimushiru -tō ) is an uninhabited volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean, which belongs geographically to the central group of the Kuril Islands and thus politically to the Sakhalin Oblast of Russia.

Geography

The island is 59 km long, 12 km wide and has an area of ​​approximately 227.6 km ². The elongated island is formed by a string of several volcanoes. Listed from northeast to southwest, these are:

  • Sawarizkogo, 1957 last eruption; up to 624 m high; Nesting of three calderas with diameters of 10, 8 and 3 kilometers; the crater is about 40 meters high.
  • Milna, 1539 m high Somma volcano in the extreme southwest of the island and its highest elevation.

History

The island was first inhabited by the Ainu in the 19th century. In the Treaty of San Francisco in 1952, the island was ceded. Previously, it belonged to Shimushiru -gun, sub-prefecture of Nemuro, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. At the time of existence of the Soviet Union, the island was used for military purposes. At the north end of the island is a former U- boat base.
